Jules Bailey shares results of a recent poll that shows he leads with 38 percent of voters’ support.

Bailey’s campaign commissioned the polling.

More than a quarter of Portland voters are undecided, however, meaning the race coud go either way if the survey is accurate.

“I think it’s reflective of the work I’ve done in the Oregon Legislature and on the County Commission, and I think it shows Portlanders want to have a conversation about the future of their city,” says Bailey, who represented a portion of Southeast Portland in the Oregon House of Representatives before being elected to the board of commissioners.

Wheeler’s campaign dismissed the poll’s result, and Bailey’s people countered in a way that indicates they knew how the state Treasurer was going to respond.

“This clearly isn’t a credible poll, but Jules Bailey is a practiced politician and he’s going to focus on this sort of thing,” [Wheeler’s campaign manager Michael] Cox said in an email. “Ted Wheeler is an experienced policy maker and he’s focused on solutions to the challenges facing our city.”

Stacey Dycus, Bailey’s campaign consultant, defended the poll. She called attention to similarities with a Wheeler poll shared with potential donors in September, which showed him in front of Hales.

“Although Jules didn’t use two Washington, D.C., pollsters as Wheeler did, Oregon pollster Ben Patinkin is highly credible and used the same methodology and has the same margin of error as the one Wheeler released against Hales in September,” she wrote.
