The Scappoose Industrial Airpark is currently owned by the Port of St. Helens, but city wants to take ownership from the port.

The city wants to use the airport to recruit industrial and aviation-based development, saying the Port of St. Helens is neglecting the airport’s potential.

At the moment it is merely an idea — there are no definitive plans — but it is an idea that would be in the best interest of local businesses, job seekers and for economic development, Hanken said.

“We all think the airport is a diamond in the rough,” he said. “We want to polish that diamond.”
