On Sunday, the Oregonian published an editorial explaining “why climate change will not be on our 2015 editorial agenda.” The column argues that global warming is a federal, not a state issue, and that climate regulation will hinder job and economic growth.
The editorial appeared a few days after Washington state governor Jay Inslee proposed an ambitious cap and trade program that would put our neighbor to the north at the leading edge of global efforts to combat climate change. British Columbia has a carbon tax; California, a cap and trade program.
Should Washington legislators approve the carbon regulations, Oregon will be the climate change outlier on the West Coast.
It is unclear whether the Oregonian will cover the carbon tax debate expected to take place during the 2015 legislative session.
The editorial has set off a firestorm on twitter:
Stunningly flawed logic: @Oregonian edit board explains it won’t cover #climatechange b/c it’s not a local issue: http://t.co/rfGeMi6dSJ

@LukensErik Nice job. This has got to rank as one of the most idiotic things ever written by a large group of highly educated people.
