The Oregon Convention Center is still focusing on attracting out-of-town conventions despite the failure of a government-owned headquarters hotel project adjacent to the venue.
It was believed that the convention center would struggle without the creation of the hotel.
Without the hotel, supporters claimed convention business would drop off so much that center operators would have to start scheduling community fairs and government meetings there just to keep it full. The resulting drop in tourism dollars would ultimately hurt the regional economy, or so the argument went.
But since the hotel plan was killed last September, the result has been different. The Metropolitan Exposition Recreation Commission that operates the center has not given up on attracting out-of-town conventions.
