Scientists say there is a 40 percent chance of megathrust earthquake and tsunami on the Cascadia Subduction Zone off Coos Bay in the next 50 years. Physical risks to the facility, which is proposed to be built on a sand spit north of town, would come from violent ground motion, soil liquefaction, lateral spreading and subsidence.
