Senate overrides governor vetoes


The Senate votes to overturn Gov. Kulongoski’s vetoes on fisheries and PERS bills.

The Senate voted this week to overturn two of Gov. Kulongoski’s vetoes, one on a fisheries bill, the other on a measure clarifying responsibility for PERS miscalculations.

Last year’s education spending bill was the only other time one of Kulongoski’s vetoes had been overruled.

Senate Majority Leader Richard Devlin insisted there was no spite in the override votes and the governor was told ahead of time.

But there was an assertion of legislative power on a bill the unions wanted and another that was important to rural Republicans.
