The Portland area lost 52,200 jobs last year — about 5 percent of the work force, according to the the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. The bureau said the total number of jobs in the Portland-Beaverton-Vancouver region fell from 1,034,600 in 2008 to 982,400 last year.

Nationally, 99 percent of the nation’s largest labor markets posted losses last year, and some were far greater than Portland. For example, the biggest loser was the Los Angeles-Long Beach-Santa Ana region, where 194,900 disappeared. Close behind it was the New York-Northern New Jersey-Long Island region, where 186,100 jobs were lost.
