Chaves Grows Jobs in Baker By Diversifying
Chaves Consulting, Inc. (CCI) celebrated its’ 25th year in business this year. For most of the years, CCI built its business and reputation by employing one to two people to develop software for Oregon cities and counties. Five years ago, founder Richard Chaves decided that he wanted to create jobs for Baker County citizens through diversifying what CCI delivers.By the end of 2009, CCI will provide jobs to twenty people as a result of growing contracts for which software development is a small part of the whole. For example, CCI now contracts with the Department of Human Services to print, mail and receive payments for 18,000 Oregon Health Plan Premium (OHP) bills per month. CCI also provides the Help Desk 800# services to answer OHP clients’ questions about their bills. Though CCI did write the billing software within 30 days of receiving the contract, the current day-to-day operation is focused on delivering great customer service over the phone. As the OHP Premium program grows over the next few months, so will CCI’s ability to create jobs for this remote, rural location.
Last month, CCI won the competitive contract to provide IT and Help Desk services for the local school district whose IT Director was retiring which created three more jobs. “We saw an opportunity to create jobs while saving the school district money, so we went for it!” said President Richard Chaves.
CCI also won a contract to provide Help Desk, customer support services for Oregon’s Voter Registration Software called OCVR which employs two full-time and one part-time person.
“Baker needs jobs so that’s our focus,” said CEO Kathleen Chaves. “Richard is a third generation Baker County resident so he feels a lot of empathy for our community,” she added. “Our people do whatever it takes to serve the customer. We hire people with that attitude. In fact, our trademarked motto is “Beyond The Call!”TM We hope our reputation will continue to grow jobs in this community that we love.”
