Wind makes 10.5% of Oregon electricity

10.5% of the electricity generated in Oregon comes from wind farms, the sixth highest rate in the nation.

Wind generation accounts for less than 5 percent of the electricity consumed in Oregon. The lion's share comes from hydroelectric dams, natural gas and coal-fired power plants, and much of that power is generated out of state. Likewise, much of the wind power generated in Oregon is under contract with utilities in California.

Renewable penetration will continue to rise, however. The state's two largest electric utilities are required to meet 25 percent of their customers' electricity needs with renewable energy by 2025. Portland General Electric says 11 percent of customer demand will be supplied via renewable generation this year, mostly from wind farms located in Eastern Oregon. PacifiCorp has also invested heavily in wind, though much of that has taken place out of state.
