The Portland City Council will consider a measure to fluoridate the city’s water.

Leonard made the agreement with the Everyone Deserves Healthy Teeth Coalition, a recently-announced alliance that supports fluoridating Portland’s water to reduce tooth decay. It is compromised of 58 heath, minority, labor, social service and child advocacy organizations. Prominent members include Central City Concern, Children First for Oregon, Kaiser Permanente Northwest, the Latino Network, Legacy Health, the Oregon Dental Association, the Oregon Health & Sciences University, Providence Health & Services – Oregon, Regency BlueCross BlueShield of Oregon, SEIU Local 49 and the Urban League.

Efforts to fluoridate Portland’s water have been opposed in the past by people and organizations that argue that it presents unacceptable health risks, especially to people allergic to it.
