Gov. John Kitzhaber ordered state agencies to suspend all but essential hiring for December and January.
The move follows a letter sent Monday by the three co-chairmen of the Legislature’s budget committee asking the governor to tell agencies to stop “non-critical” spending until the state’s next economic forecast and until lawmakers are able to reassess their $14.8 billion budget plan during the upcoming February session.
In addition to asking for a hiring freeze, including any new Oregon State Police recruit classes, the budget chiefs asked that agencies stop enrolling people in a variety of state programs, some of which have already been cut.
Their list includes the Oregon Health Plan, offering benefits to low-income folks; employment-related day care for parents working to get off state cash assistance; Oregon Project Independence, which provides in-home help to seniors, and the state’s pre-K education program for 3- to 5-year-olds.
