A recent economic forecast indicates the city of Salem will have to trim $10.5 million over the next five years in order to maintain current levels of service.

“The (city) has managed well through the last four years of the economic downturn and will continue to do so, even with the continuing financial challenges presented in this long-range forecast,” [city manager Linda] Norris stated in an executive summary.

Norris said at the current levels of service, city expenses will outpace income by the 2013-14 fiscal year.

Norris will discuss where to lay the scalpel at a city council work session on Monday.
