Intel is launching an encore fellowships program to encourage its U.S. retirees to use their professional skills in community work.
Retirees will receive a $25,000 annual stipend, funded by Intel, along with six months of health benefits if they bring their professional skills to nonprofits on a full- or part-time basis.
“It fits in perfectly with the changing nature of retirement,” said Bill MacKenzie, Intel’s Oregon spokesman. “It’s no longer just leaving work.”
While several companies have experimented with similar programs, Intel is the first big corporation to make it available across the board.
These encore fellowships could have a disproportionate benefit to Oregon, Intel’s largest operating hub. The California-based company has 16,000 employees in the state, more than any other business.
