To compete with Black Friday, small local retailers are creating their own holidays and events such as Small Business Saturday.

Though lines might form in shopping centers and strip malls at 3 a.m. for deep discounts on a few sought-after items, most neighborhood shopping areas get a fraction of the traffic on the day after Thanksgiving. 

A number of small retailers will partner for events across the city through the holidays and, on Saturday, a more official grouping of such businesses plans to party. Supportland, a loyalty program of sorts for 94 local businesses, will celebrate what it’s calling the “All-Stars of the New Economy.”
