Portland-based Fortis Construction will help build Facebook’s new data center in Sweden.

Fortis built Facebook’s first corporate data center in Prineville.

Facebook confirmed plans Thursday for a 300,000-square-foot project in Lulea, near the Arctic Circle. Fortis said it won the $121 million contract along with two other companies – NCC Construction in Sweden and DPR Construction of Redwood City, Calif.

Fortis said work will start this month, and the first phase will be complete in December 2012. The facility will later add two other buildings, scheduled for completion in 2014.

Officials in Sweden have pegged the total cost of the project at $760 million.

In addition to Facebook’s Prineville data center, which opened in April and is already expanding, Fortis is helping build the company’s second facility in North Carolina. It’s also worked on seven similar projects, which the company does not identify by name.
