Facebook is angry with the Oregon Department of Revenue after a misunderstanding over the department’s assessment of the value of Facebook’s Prineville data center.
The department acknowledges a misunderstanding, and misstating how Oregon applies its tax breaks. The agency insists its actions didn’t affect Facebook’s tax bill — $26,162, on land assessed at a little more than $1.7 million.
Still, Facebook says it’s wary — concerned that the state is superceding the company’s local tax deal. While Facebook doesn’t object to its current tax bill, the company said it’s concerned about what may happen in the future and it’s appealing the state’s assessment.
“These assessments would undercut the enterprise zone agreement we made with Crook County that resulted in the valuable economic investments we made in the area,” Facebook said in a written statement.
The dispute has also alarmed economic development officials in Central Oregon, who fear it could scare off other data centers that are scouting the region.
