Brian VanOrnum is working to expand his Milwaukie nanobrewery, Short Snout Brewery, using Kickstarter to raise funds.

A nanobrewery typically produces seven barrels of beer or less at a time, and Short Snout averages one or two.

“It’s the American dream,” he said. “I’m going to own my own business and I’m going to brew my own beer.”

VanOrnum sips an amber fresh hop beer he made from hops he grew in his backyard. It’s an experiment, just like the blackberry sage beer brewed with black tea that gained a quick following from tasting parties, despite his own reservations. VanOrnum works in the wine industry, which inspires him to branch out from the categories of porter or stout or IPA. Instead, he tries to create beers that complement food the way wines do. He has even tried to mix red wine and beer together, but didn’t quite achieve perfection.
