Former U.S. Senator Gordon Smith was honored with the first Oregon Business Leadership Award from the Salem Area Chamber of Commerce.

Smith, whose name remains on his family’s frozen-food company in Eastern Oregon, was praised by several civic leaders. Among them were former Salem Mayor Janet Taylor; former Gov. Vic Atiyeh; former Oregon Senate President Gene Derfler of Salem; and Kerry Tymchuk, Smith’s state director while Smith was in the U.S. Senate and now executive director of the Oregon Historical Society.
