Portland merchants are preparing for the city’s plastic bag ban to take effect Saturday.

Target, Walmart and Walgreens will be supplying reusable bags to consumers during inaugural ban day giveaways, according to Amy Ruiz, the mayor’s communications director.

Beginning Saturday, the measure requires retailers to use only recycled paper bags, compostable plastic bags or reusable bags when checking out customers. It targets stores that gross more than $2 million in annual income and allows exceptions for plastic bags for produce, meat and bulk foods. Plastic-wielding violators would pay $100 for the first offense, $200 for the second offense in the same calendar year and $500 for any subsequent violation within a year.
