Oregon saw another increase in the number of people seeking food stamps and cash assistance in September.

New data from the Oregon Department of Human Services showed 425,417 households — accounting for 785,668 people — received food stamps last month. That was a 9.5 percent rise from September 2010.

The number of low-income families receiving government cash assistance increased to 33,267, a 14 percent spike statewide from last September.

“The caseload continues to grow, which is indicative that we’re still in an economic crisis,” said Xochitl Esparza, who manages the state’s Temporary Assistance for Needy Families program.

At the same time, the first of October brought another round of cuts to some programs. For example, the state will cut back on the amount of money a family might receive while waiting for their assistance application to be processed.
