ClearEdge Power installed two fuel cells at Portland Community College’s Sylvania Campus as part of a U.S. Department of Energy grant.

PCC will use the fuel cells to both reduce its energy emissions by an estimated 37 percent and to train students in fuel cell technology.

“That’s why PCC is so excited about the fuel cells,” said Laura Ward, energy resource conservation manager at PCC. “We’re already got several test technologies installed — wind turbines and solar panels. This is going to be a great addition to the program and a resource for hands-on training.”

For Hillsboro-based ClearEdge, the PCC installation, the first under the DOE grant, gives it a foothold in the educational market — and a potential training ground for future employees.
