An indoor, year-round farmers market may be coming to Springfield, in an effort dubbed the Community Food Hub Project.

The effort to establish the market…is spearheaded by the Neighborhood Economic Development Corp., a Springfield-based nonprofit agency. The organization is in the process of buying a building that now houses the First Christian Church at Fourth and A streets in downtown Springfield, a stone’s throw from the current outdoor May-through-October Springfield Farmers’ Market. The agreed-upon purchase price is $850,000.

NEDCO plans to renovate the church, a 10,000-square-foot space, creating a large open area for vendors to set up stalls and establishing spots for two potential anchor businesses — a coffee shop and a bakery, for example — according to Sarai Johnson, the organization’s program director. Johnson added that the group hopes to build a commercial kitchen on the premises, which could be rented out to local food carts or catering businesses, and to make office space available to small businesses.
