Legislative staff to take unpaid furloughs

The staff of the Oregon Legislature will be subject to unpaid furloughs, although most of their days off will differ from those taken by other state employees.

They include professionals who provide help to legislators on drafting budgets, tax codes and legislation. They also include personal assistants to the 90 legislators, but not the elected members themselves.

Each employee will take four days off without pay during the year ending June 30, 2012. Two of the days are Nov. 25 — the day after Thanksgiving, when other state employees will have unpaid furloughs — and Jan. 3. An exception is made for the office of the legislative counsel, whose staff will take Dec. 27 off because of a pending deadline for legislation for the 2012 session.
