SAO names Skip Newberry president

The Software Association of Oregon chose Skip Newberry, Portland Mayor Sam Adams’ economic policy adviser, as its new president.

Newberry, who helped make software one of the city’s top business priorities, takes over later this month as president of an organization that’s struggled to assert a leadership role in Oregon’s tech community. 

On Wednesday, Newberry said the board has charged him with capitalizing on the state’s software renaissance by networking companies within the state and improving Oregon’s profile beyond its borders. “They really are interested in taking the organization in a new direction that has an overt economic development focus,” Newberry said. 

In particular, Newberry said that he hopes to improve communication among software businesses around Oregon and nurture existing efforts to mentor new businesses and provide resources to help small companies grow.
