The University of Oregon announced a campus development plan calling for net-zero increase in energy use, despite continued construction projects.
To reach its new goals, new buildings will be required to meet LEED Gold certifications standards set forth by the U.S. Green Building Council, producing a 35 percent greater energy savings than the state’s building code requires. The policy also addresses water use, stormwater treatment and educational standards.
The sustainability policy comes with a price premium of $10 million over a 10-year planning cycle. During that time the university expects to add 1.3 million square feet in new construction. The school also intends to recoup some of the added costs through savings on utility bills.
