A Eugene software company launched a free smartphone app that helps Portland drivers avoid red lights.

Using GPS data, crowd-sourcing and real-time feeds from the city’s traffic control system, Green Driver promises all sorts of “green.” Green lights to get there faster. Extra dollars from reducing gas consumption. And love for the planet, since less idling equals less carbon. 

But even if it solves one of motor-kind’s most aggravating everyday experiences, local traffic cops and groups fighting distracted driving say mobile navigation programs such as Green Driver create bigger problems.
