The Oregon timber industry filed a lawsuit against the Obama administration in an effort to double the amount of logging allowed on Western Oregon forests managed by the U.S. Bureau of Land Management.

The American Forest Resource Council — along with timber firms Seneca Jones, Starfire Lumber and five other logging firms or mills — filed the complaint in U.S. District Court in Washington, D.C., alleging that the Western Oregon Plan Revision, a management strategy for the 2.2 million acres of forests the BLM manages in Oregon, should be revised to bump harvest levels from 502 million board feet to 1.2 billion board feet annually.

“At a time when our mills need this timber to survive, it is outrageous that the Obama administration is directing the BLM not to sustainably harvest,” resource council President Tom Partin said in a prepared statement.
