Rates for on-street parking around Portland State University may raise 25% under a new proposal.

Tom Miller, Mayor Sam Adams’ recent pick to lead Portland’s Bureau of Transportation, wants to raise the rates for on-street parking around PSU by 25 percent to pay for building safer bike routes, wider sidewalks and better traffic signals near campus. But he wants to do so without appearing to take the helm on the potentially provocative idea, public records show.

The move, if later approved by the Portland City Council, would add to the patchwork of parking rules that now include higher rates on some nights around Jeld-Wen Field and lower rates in the Lloyd District. Dedicated carpool spots, loading zones and resident-only parking in certain neighborhoods add to the hodgepodge of parking regulations.

For their part, PSU officials also don’t want to be seen as pushing a concept that might upset downtown businesses.
