The first Ecotality electric car public charging station arrived in the Metro area this week, at Wilsonville City Hall.

EV4 Oregon and Ecotality will open a solar-powered public charging station at 3620 NE Martin Luther King Blvd today. And Ecotality officials say they’re actively negotiating to start installing infrastructure in Salem, Eugene, Corvallis and Hillsboro. The company has announced partnerships with Fred Meyers, Arco and Sears so far.

The electric cars and infrastructure have arrived more slowly than anticipated. While it  originally hoped to install 1,100 public chargers by the end of this month, Ecotality is pacing them with the arrival of cars and now targets similar numbers by the end of the year depending on vehicle deliveries, said Rich Feldman, Ecotality’s regional manager. Level 2 stations can provide a charge equivalent to between 11 and 22 miles of range in an hour. Ecotality plans to install 25 fast charge stations in Oregon, in addition to the residential chargers that go with most cars.
