The Oregon Senate voted unanimously to ask Congress to renew federal aid to the state’s timber-dependent communities.

“This is not begging the federal government for money,” said George, floor manager for House Joint Memorial 25, which has cleared the House. “This is us demanding that they hold up even a small portion of their obligation to us.”

Federal agencies used to share part of national forest timber sales to schools and county road funds, and part of timber sales on lands formerly owned by the Oregon & California Railroad to 18 Western Oregon counties, including Marion and Polk counties.
