The Eastport Plaza Walmart in Portland adapted their expansion plan with input from the Lents Neighborhood Association and Mayor Sam Adams’ office.

The new 21,000-square-foot addition will include space for fresh produce and a deli.

Walmart made a number of changes to its original proposal to expand the store, which include better pedestrian and bike access, some solar power, improved aesthetics and saved trees.

The reworked design is the result of more than a years’ worth of effort by members of the neighborhood task force, who set out to improve the store, not to bar its expansion, said Nick Christensen, chair of the Lents Neighborhood Association.
