The next wave of job cuts is coming in government jobs, threatening Oregon’s economic recovery.

The depth of public sector job loss won’t be clear for several months, but decisions being made today in Washington, D.C., Salem and Lane County will impact the local job market. If the cuts are severe, business people worry, they will impact the state’s fledgling recovery.

“Just as the private sector is beginning to feel enough confidence to actually hire people, if public sector employees are laid off, people will tighten their belts in the public sector — either because they’ve been laid off or fear losing their job,” [Lane Community College President Mary Spilde] said. “That will create another wave of concern in the private sector and they’ll stop hiring. It just becomes a vicious cycle for everybody then.”
