Federal regulators announced the biggest commercial salmon season off Oregon’s Coast in four years.
It means a fleet battered by three years of nearly complete closures and 2010’s mediocre season could haul in three times as many salmon as trollers caught last year. It means consumers who have had to settle for fish caught near the Columbia River or in Alaska can look forward to fresher, higher quality Chinook salmon in the marketplace, as early as next week.
But it doesn’t mean that sought-after local fish will be any cheaper. And, for some Oregon fishermen, the good news came too late. Without federal disaster assistance to prop up fishermen who couldn’t make ends meet last season, some trollers can’t afford the thousands of dollars it costs to get their boats ready to fish this year. And they won’t be partaking in what’s predicted to be an all-around bounty.
