Muscling in on mussels


Concerns about an invasive species prompt a new bill.

After catching a mussel-infested boat last week, leaders are scrambling to protect Oregon’s waterways. Sadly, the state may fall short of the millions needed.

If that boat had ended up in Oregon, been launched in a lake and spread mussels, Oregon authorities would have a hard time getting the money to deal with the infestation, said Mark Sytsma, the director of the Center for Lakes and Reservoirs at Portland State University.

That’s why advocates say Oregon needs House Bill 2020, which sets aside $5 million in emergency funds for new invasions of species that would destroy Oregon’s landscape.
