The new export market works like this: Buyers pick up the live crab from the fishing boats in port, then truck it to Vancouver, B.C., or San Francisco, where there are direct flights to mainland China and Hong Kong. Some is also kept for the local San Francisco and Vancouver markets, which include large populations of Chinese, said [executive director of the Oregon Dungeness Crab Commission Nick] Furman.
The surge in exports is good news for fishermen. The average wholesale price per pound for the first 18 million pounds last year was $1.76. Those same 18 million pounds this year brought 34 cents more for an average price of $2.10, said Furman. As the season advances, prices traditionally increase.
