“Not only is it a moral imperative, it’s an economic imperative for Oregon,” said Susan Castillo, the state schools superintendent and the first Hispanic woman elected to statewide office.
But Dee Sutton-Velez of Neskowin, who also is Hispanic, offered a differing view.
“It does not make economic sense, during a time of recession, and it would only escalate the problem of illegal immigration,” she said.
