Renovation businesses suffered greatly in the down economy, and some owners are doubting their businesses will ever return to pre-recession levels.

Matthew Watkins of Mosaic Remodel and Construction is one of these business owners.

“In the height of the market, we stayed busy,” he said. “A lot of people were flipping houses. They would buy a house, call us to come in and renovate it and then turn around and sell it as fast as we could finish the job.”

When the housing bubble burst, so did Watkins’ business plan.

“In the beginning of 2009, it was almost like falling off a cliff. Everything was doing well, then there were two months without a single phone call,” Watkins said.
