Oregon City pulp mill workers have been coming to the 505 Tavern after work for five decades.

The tavern faces hard times after all 175 Blue Heron Paper Co. mill workers lost their jobs Friday.

“This place has always been a testament to middle-class that got paid decent wages,” said bartender Michael Berman, 45, who owns the 505 with his father. “That’s slowing eroding away. But I plan on staying.”

Berman said although the mill closure is “beyond sad,” he’s determined to preserve the place’s working-class feel. Effective today, customers who show their union cards will receive happy hour prices any time of the day.

“The mills built this bar,” Berman said. “I won’t let that stop.”
