Oregon City’s Blue Heron Paper Co. is closing after filing for bankruptcy protection 14 months ago, eliminating 175 jobs.

The company turns recycled waste paper into newsprint, bags, paper towels and placemats for McDonalds restaurants.


The employee-owned company cited competition from China for recycled paper, which has increased the cost of materials, as a major factor in the shutdown. 

The company’s 175 employees face an immediate financial crisis. Their health insurance ends after their last day on the job. They receive no severance pay. Their stock in the company – most employees held portfolios once valued between $75,000 and $150,000 – is probably worthless.
