Russian owners might idle their Portland steel plant.

The Evraz Group, Russian owners of the former Oregon Steel, aren’t giving any details.

An Evraz spokeswoman declined to provide details, saying vie e-mail the company will undertake “periodic shutdowns in the coming months as we match production to customer orders.”

The company plans to idle the mill for at least two weeks, according to American Metal Market. The closure could stretch to four weeks if sales remain weak.

Global steel markets have been battered by the recession.
