Opponents of the proposed statewide plastic bag ban are pushing for recycling the bags instead.

Senate Bill 536 aims to outlaw the nearly 1 billion single-use plastic checkout bags used yearly in Oregon.

Plastic bags are popular with consumers and can be recycled into pipes, storage containers, flower pots and other products, said Mark Daniels, vice president of sustainability and environmental policy for a Hartsville, S.C.-based company that recycles plastic bags.

Daniels said in an interview that he and others will be arguing to lawmakers that they should focus on combating litter and educating consumers about the best way to recycle a plastic bag, not forcing consumers to pay for their bags.
