The voucher books hold 10 one-way tickets for $600 – the Port hopes to sell 500 of them before a $4.5 million state subsidy for the service runs out on March 15. But demand has been weak.
“We’ve removed all the obstacles to flying,” said Bruce Conner, the Port’s marketing manager. “You can bring your bags. The tickets are transferable. No advance reservations are required.”
Conner said the 25-minute passenger service was slow to catch on, in part because the airline had a minimal online presence. “To travel agents in New York, the closest airport to Astoria was in Portland,” he said.
That’s been fixed.
Conner said the market is there, pointing out that before Horizon pulled out of Astoria, they were carrying 900 passengers a month.
