Even though it’s still under construction, Cabela’s first Oregon store in Springfield  is already attracting attention from shoppers and job seekers.

An estimated 90 construction contractors have been working on the Gateway Mall store in Springfield, and the company says it plans to hire between 150 and 200 workers.

The coming of Cabela’s, whose stores are regional draws, “was a huge game changer” for the mall, [mall manager Skip] Sandgren said. Gateway, like many shopping centers nationally, has been struggling with vacancies in recent years.

“One of the things that we did when Cabela’s actually signed was develop more of a merchandising strategy of the whole mall that was more complementary of having Cabela’s here,” Sandgren said. “Cabela’s is kind of a defining tenant. We want to make sure whatever tenants we bring in would be a good fit.”
