The cost of living in the Portland region is higher than 84% of all other metropolitan areas, according to a report on the region’s economy recently released by the Portland Business Alliance.
“I really think that’s all about families,” says Alliance President and Chief Executive Officer Sandra McDonough. “It’s really a question of whether families can afford a house, save money to send their kids to college and do all those things that families want to do. We are turning into a place where families can no longer afford to live.”
The cost of living comparisons were compiled by the Council for Community and Economic Research for the first quarter of 2010. Among other things, they show that Portland housing costs are 31.6 percent higher than the metropolitan average, while health care costs were 10.9 percent above average and groceries were 4.9 percent higher. The cost of utilities was the only major expense category where Portland was lower than the average U.S. city.
