Turner Construction is working on a tricky $40 million upgrade of the University of Oregon’s Central Power Station.
The contractor has to keep the old equipment working while replacing it with new hardware in order to avoid a loss of power during the University’s fall term.
“Everything we do here affects everything on campus,” Turner Construction senior project manager Tom Jordan said. “All of our work has to be scheduled and coordinated because we are completely gutting a power plant while trying to keep everything running.”
Jordan is leading an approximately $40 million project to replace the university’s steam plant with a new cogeneration facility. The intent of the project is to modernize the central power station and build power production capacity as the campus grows over the next four years. With multiple new buildings – including the Matthew Knight Arena and new homes for the college of education and college of architecture – coming online, the existing plant would be unable to handle power demands, according to Randy Collins, operations supervisor for the power station.
