Gresham-based HM3 Energy plans to build 20 more biomass briquette plants throughout Oregon, starting in Prineville.

HM3 Energy manufactures biomass briquettes as a clean coal replacement fuel for use at coal-burning power plants.

According to [company president Hiroshi] Morihara, HM3 sought locations with a nearby biomass supply and a way to effectively ship their product. Prineville had both.

“We like to have the plants within 40 miles of forested land — especially private forests,” he said. Morihara went on to add that they prefer rail shipping if possible, and the presence of the Prineville railway made the community an attractive plant location.
