Local swimsuit maker Popina Swimwear is adding a larger store in Portland's Pearl District next month.
The company has grown successfully by focusing on comfort and style.
Company founder Pamela [Levenson] designs the swimsuits, which are made in Oregon. They sell the swimsuits to 40 companies in 12 states, plus online sales through the company website.
“Somebody once said that women would rather have their teeth worked on than try on a bathing suit,” [Will] Levenson says. “That is so sad.”
His wife carved a niche by designing swimsuits more popular for Northwest women, who tend to be less enthused about the string bikinis marketed for the Southern California scene.
