The candidates for Oregon governor appeared at the Nike headquarters near Beaverton and argues whether a newcomer or veteran governor would be better for Oregon business.
In their Thursday appearances, the two candidates clashed over whether to significantly cut the state’s tax on capital gains. Dudley said a deep cut in taxes on investment earnings would help jump-start Oregon’s anemic economy. Kitzhaber countered that reducing the capital gains tax would blow a bigger hole in the budget without providing any quick help on jobs.
Dudley charged that the state’s current low rankings in several areas — from having a higher-than-average unemployment rate over the last 14 years to its low high-school graduation rate — can be traced in part to Kitzhaber’s lack of leadership as governor between 1995 and 2002.
