An $11 million project will bring high-speed Internet access to rural areas of Clackamas County for the first time.

The construction will take about three years, eventually providing Internet to almost 100,000 Clackamas County households and 3,600 businesses, hospitals, fire stations and schools.

Construction of 180 miles of broadband fiber is being largely financed by a $7.8 million federal stimulus grant — by far the largest grant of its kind in the state.

Clackamas County, in joining several public and private partners in applying for the grant, has pledged to kick in $3.3 million.
