Oregon’s four research universities have brought in $850 million in grants over the past year.
That money — more than twice what the state spent last year on its seven public universities — helps support thousands of high-paying research jobs and low-paying graduate research assistantships and the development of start-up companies like Home Dialysis Plus.
While research grants, most of them federal, won by Oregon universities represent only a fraction of the state’s $161 billion gross domestic product, they have a significant effect on the economy, especially when they spawn thriving companies, said Bob Whelan, director of ECONorthwest, an economic consulting firm in Portland.
